It enstils the despair of the world into the player, just by them observing the world. The colour pallet is underplayed, as the world looks to be more grey than anything else. “Shadow of the Colossus” has been described as “hauntingly beautiful”, and I tend to agree with this description. The art is another aspect of the game’s worldbuilding. The music of each encounter is different and it always sets the scene perfectly for your battle, giving the player a strong impression of each monster whilst saying very little about it. Upon defeating the creature, The End of Battle plays, and you briefly revel in your victory, but you still know just how little you have to celebrate. As you climb the colossi and it attempts to shake you off, tracks like Grotesque Figures reinforces how much stronger this being is compared to you. Creeping Shadow plays when you look up at this monstrous creature and realise just how hopeless your endevour is. As you start approach the monsters lair, and see some semblance of it’s destruction, Silence is the track that comes in and immediately starts building tension towards your battle. You only have to listen to a few tracks to get a picture of what sort of world this is. One of the many bosses faced throughout the gameĮvery aspect of “Shadow of the Colossus” creates an atmosphere of helplessness, and an almost oppressive despair. This may not sound like it is a great piece of storytelling, but personally I feel as if this game really showcases how brilliant an interactive narrative can be. It’s a fairly simple premise, and throughout most of the game the only dialogue is this dark god saying where you need to go to to find the next boss, and then hinting at how to defeat it. Every boss has a weak point, and you need to work out how you can climb this being to get to and attack the weak point. From there, the game essentially becomes a long series of boss fights. This god states to him that in order to do so, the boy must defeat 16 giant colossi, spread around the forbidden land where the game is set. But a quick summary of the game is that a boy’s beloved has died and he pleads to a dark god to have her revived. In doing so, the game told a surprisingly engaging story, whilst barely using any spoken dialogue.įor those who have not played this game, I first must say I highly recommend it. But one of the aspects of the game I absolutely loved was the worldbuilding, creating an incredible atmosphere of helplessness that held throughout the entire game. It’s without a doubt one of the most epic experiences you can play. However, I only played it fairly recently when it was re-released on the PS3. It was made on the PS2 by SCE Studio Japans Team Ico.
